Robin Cloud Platform (RCP) delivers numerous benefits to our customers such as improved productivity, lower costs, and increased agility. No matter if you are managing your own on-premises data centers or deployed on popular public clouds, Robin benefits provide the same seamless Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) experience for all your applications, and hence delivers similar benefits to all applications.
To showcase the Robin benefits, we have built a comprehensive ROI calculator that captures various inputs from the customer and generates a detailed savings report over a 5 yr period, as shown below.
Irrespective of whether you run on public clouds or operate your own infrastructure or rent a colocation facility, there are many contributors to the overall cost. Thus, understanding the cost savings provided by Robin benefits requires detailed and careful analysis.
Costs are categorized as Hard Costs and Soft Costs. Hard Costs are attributed to an actual expense like the purchase of a physical server or licensing a software solution.
Soft Costs, on the other hand, are not attributed to an actual expense, are subjective, and very hard to calculate. For example, the cost to the company if a product release is delayed, or cost of loss of productivity due to very long environment provisioning times.
Typically in an enterprise, the finance department cares more about the reduction in hard costs, while the business and application teams care more about the reduction in soft costs (or gain in productivity and agility).
Robin Web-based ROI Calculator
Given the complexity, we generally work very closely with our customers to build ROI models that are personalized to their environment. Starting today, we are introducing a web-based ROI calculator that will help you see the savings you can achieve with the Robin Cloud Platform (RCP).
Our primary goal for the web calculator is simplicity. You have to provide minimum 8 parameters to generate a detailed 5-yr savings report. The parameter inputs, as shown below, are categorized as Application and Infrastructure. All parameters have samples values, so if you don’t have the numbers handy you can go straight to the savings report.
The first input is to select the type of application you intend to deploy on top of RCP – Big Data or Oracle. Big data applications include Hadoop, Kafka, ELK, and any of the NoSQL databases such as Cassandra, MongoDB, etc. The Oracle option represents traditional applications. The key difference between the two is that most Big Data applications are deployed on commodity compute and storage hardware (when on-premises), while Oracle and other traditional applications make use of SAN and NAS storage arrays.
To ensure simplicity we had to make a few assumptions. All assumptions can be reviewed and changed to better adapt to your situation. Note that we always assume this is a new project and new infrastructure is being purchased for the project.
Once all the inputs have been correctly entered, you can click on the ‘Calculate Savings’ button on the right side of the screen. To make changes, simply change the inputs or assumptions, and click on the ‘Recalculate’ button.
The Cost Savings report has two sections detailing multiple Robin benefits – one to show the overall savings summary and the other to show savings broken down by hardware, software, and productivity savings.
Hardware savings – Shows savings across compute and storage due to improved utilization, higher consolidation, and storage features like thin provisioning and thin cloning.
Software savings – These include reduction in license footprint across the application (Oracle / Cloudera / MySQL), operating system (RHEL), the virtualization stack (VMware).
Productivity savings – you will see a breakdown across DBA / DevOps, IT Admin, and End Users.
Between Big Data and Oracle, you will notice that for Oracle, the software savings would be highest given the high cost of its software stack, while for Big data most benefit comes from productivity and hardware savings.
Assuming you have read through the website and understood the features RCP provides, this ROI Calculator will help you envision the total value Robin benefits bring to your enterprise. If you need more detailed analysis or have any questions for us, feel free to reach out to us at email@example.com

This is the first iteration of our web calculator and more updates are being made as we speak. As always, we are always looking for feedback, suggestions, and comments, so please send them our way. Also, missing from the current calculator are references to the public cloud. This will be included in our next update to the calculator as well.
